The ProtoStealer malware is a threat that is sold as a product online. The ProtoStealer threat is mainly sold on various Russian hacking forums that often attract various shady individuals. The ProtoStealer malware is used to collect important information from the targeted host.
The developers of the ProtoStealer malware claim that this threat is able to:
- Collect files from the Steam gaming platform.
- Collect personal conversations from the Telegram instant messaging application.
- Collect the login credentials from the FileZilla FTP client.
- Collect passwords, cookies, saved credit card data, and other information from Chromium-based Web browsers.
- Collect files related to the Battle.NET gaming platform.
- Collect 'wallet.dat' files.
The fact that the ProtoStealer malware is capable of obtaining 'wallet.dat' files means that its operators would be able to collect the wallets of users and cause great financial loss. The ProtoStealer threat is a piece of malware that operates rather silently, and it is difficult to detect it.
Luckily, so far, the ProtoStealer malware has not been used by cyber crooks widely. However, if the ProtoStealer threat is as functional and silent as it is portrayed to be, it has the potential to wreak havoc and cause significant damage to the targeted hosts.
