ProSportSearch

ProSportSearch is classified as a browser hijacker and a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program). The application attempts to sneak itself onto users' computers and devices via deceptive tactics such as 'bundling' where the intruder application is packaged alongside a more desirable product, and hidden as a pre-selected choice somewhere in the installation settings, typically under the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' menus. Another tactic employed by these dubious applications is to be injected into fake installers and updates for legitimate products.

However, once ProSportSearch is delivered to the system, the effects of its presence will be felt almost immediately. The application wastes no time, as it takes control over the users' Web browsers. Browser hijackers usually target the homepage, new page tab, and the default search engine settings, as these three best serve the PUPs' purpose of generating artificial traffic towards a sponsored address.

In this case, the application is promoting its own fake search engine at prosportsearch.com. Fake engines are classified as such because they lack the functionality to produce results. Running a search query through prosportsearch.com leads to one of two possibilities. Users may be shown results generated by the legitimate Yahoo search engine, or they can be presented with low-quality results delivered by the dubious engine searchlee.com.

In the background,  browser hijackers and other PUPs also may be accessing sensitive user information stealthily and transmitting it to a remote server. The targeted data may include all visited websites, conducted searches, clicked links, etc. as well as certain device details (IP address, geolocation and more).
