Threat Database Adware ProManagerRecord

ProManagerRecord

ProManagerRecord is classified as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program), due to the deceptive distribution methods it uses for spreading itself. The application has been observed to be packaged inside fake Adobe Flash Player updates. The application targets Mac users predominantly. Its main functionality is that of an adware application, but it also has been equipped with browser hijacker capabilities. It should be noted that PUPs such as ProManagerRecord are almost never downloaded and installed by users intentionally.

Once established onto the user's device, ProManagerRecord will begin to monetize its presence as soon as possible, by running an intrusive advertising campaign. The displayed advertisements could lead to a severely diminished browsing experience, browser slowdowns, and even begin to overlay the legitimate content. Clicking on the advertisements is not encouraged, as they could take the user to unsafe or rogue third-party websites through forced redirects.

At the same time, the browser hijacker part of ProManagerRecord will establish control over specific browser settings, such as the homepage, new tab page and the default search engine. The goal is to set all affected settings to open a sponsored address. Afterward, wherever the user simply starts the browser or conducts a search in the URL bar, it would generate artificial traffic towards the promoted page.

PUPs should be removed as soon as the first signs of their activity become apparent. After all, most programs of this type possess data-harvesting capabilities. Among the captured information is the browsing history, search history, IP address, geolocation and more.
