PPMiner

The PPMiner tool is a cryptocurrency miner that is designed to target Mac systems. The PPMiner threat would be executed and would run on the targeted system without the knowledge of the user.

It is not clear what are the exact propagation methods utilized by the operators of the PPMiner malware. Cybersecurity experts speculate that this miner may be distributed via malvertising campaigns, bogus software updates and downloads, pirated applications, etc. As soon as the PPMiner threat manages to compromise the targeted system, it will make sure to gain persistence. This is achieved by tampering with the Launch Daemon. To avoid detection, the PPMiner malware may appropriate the name 'mshelper.' According to malware analysts, the PPMiner threat is an altered copy of the notorious XMRig miner. The XMRig miner is designed to mine for the Monero cryptocurrency. Having a cryptocurrency miner present on your Mac may end up reducing its lifespan significantly. This is because miners like the PPMiner threat would abuse the system's hardware without any concern for its longevity or health. The PPMiner malware will likely use huge amounts of computing power to mine more efficiently. In turn, this will cause your Mac to overheat and potentially damage your hardware. This may cause long-term stability and performance issues. Furthermore, while the PPMiner threat is running, you may be unable to play video games or use some applications as the system's resources would be limited.

Cryptocurrency miners have been a very popular tool among cybercriminals for several years. However, most of them would normally target Windows computers. Recently, more and more cyber crooks are developing malware designed to target OSX systems, including Mac cryptocurrency miners. Make sure you use a legitimate anti-virus software suite to protect your Mac from threats like the PPMiner.
