The Polizia Penitenziaria Ransomware Trojan is a Winlocker infection that criminals use to scam computer users located in Italy. The Polizia Penitenziaria Ransomware infection displays a fake message from the Italian police that attempts to extort a ransom from the victim. This is a well known scam that has been around for several years. The first precursors to the Polizia Penitenziaria Ransomware infection first appeared in 2009 and 2010 and demanded payment through SMS message. Modern variants of threats like the Polizia Penitenziaria Ransomware demand payment of this ransom through money transfer services like Ukash or PaySafeCard. There are numerous families of ransomware and, since this scam represents a multimillion dollar industry for criminals organizations, new variants are appearing at a very fast pace. The Polizia Penitenziaria Ransomware infection is one of the many variants of the Reveton family of Police Ransomware, one of the largest families of ransomware Trojans today.
The Polizia Penitenziaria Ransomware infection will try to make you believe that you are being prosecuted by the police. To do this, the Polizia Penitenziaria Ransomware will display a threatening message containing the logos of the Italian police. This message accuses you of viewing forbidden material online or participating in the distribution of malware or copyrighted material. After threatening you with years of prison and fines of thousands of Euros, the Polizia Penitenziaria Ransomware will claim that it is possible to avoid all of this by paying a fine of a couple hundred of Euros. However, doing this will do nothing to unlock your computer. Like other malware in the Reveton family of Trojans, the Polizia Penitenziaria Ransomware infection uses the victim's web cam to take a picture of the victim and then threatens to send this picture to the police unless its ransom is paid.
The main difficulty with dealing with malware like Polizia Penitenziaria Ransomware is bypassing the threatening ransom message in order to access your security software. Alternate boot methods such as using Safe Mode or an external memory device can allow you to regain access to Windows. Once you do it, a reliable anti-malware program can help you to remove all malicious files involved in the Polizia Penitenziaria Ransomware and revert harmful changes made to your computer's settings in order to keep you out.
