PerfectConverters is a browser extension that might promise users a faster and more convenient way to convert PDFs, for example, into other file formats. Unfortunately, this supposed functionality is quickly overshadowed by the primary purpose of the application - to promote a fake search engine via browser hijacker techniques.
Indeed, after being installed on the system, PerfectConverters will take over several important browser settings, mainly the homepage, new tab page and the default search engine. Each one will now be set to open the promoted perfectconverters.com page. A redirect to the address will occur every time users launch the affected browsers, open a new tab, or initiate a search query via the URL bar.
Fake engines do not produce results by themselves, and perfectconverters.com is not an exception. Users will notice that the displayed results have been taken either from the legitimate Yahoo engine or from nearbyme.io. While nearbyme.io is capable of generating results, typically they are of low quality and could include various sponsored advertisements.
Browser hijackers and other PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) also may be equipped with data-tracking capabilities. The operators of such applications are typically interested in obtaining the user's browsing data, as well as numerous device details. However, in some cases, the intrusive PUP may even try to access sensitive details that have been saved as autofill data in the Web browsers. These often include account credentials, banking information or payment details.
