PC Speed Maximizer is a bogus registry cleaner. Although PC Speed Maximizer is advertised as a way of cleaning a computer and improving its performance, PC Speed Maximizer displays large amounts of exaggerated error messages and fake scan results in order to lure inexperienced computer users into purchasing upgrades for PC Speed Maximizer or other bogus security products. PC Speed Maximizer may claim that the victim's computer is in very poor shape regardless of its actual state. Even on a brand new computer with a fresh installation of the Windows operating system, PC Speed Maximizer will claim that it is riddled with problems that require the computer user to purchase this fake system optimizer.
PC Speed Maximizer displays numerous error messages, most of them claiming that there are very serious problems on the victim's computer. Many of these supposed problems, however, are laughable or even impossible, although inexperienced computer users will probably not know that. The fact is that the error messages that PC Speed Maximizer displays are simply designed to scare the PC user in order to prompt them to 'buy' PC Speed Maximizer or fake security programs associated with this bogus registry cleaner. When testing PC Speed Maximizer on a clean computer, this fake registry cleaner showed that there were more than a hundred problems on the victim's computer. The message displayed contained alarming red lettering and frame and claimed that these problems were severely slowing down the infected computer. Although the message contained a button marked 'fix now', clicking on the button leads the computer user to a screen asking for an activation code and prompting the victim to purchase this fake registry cleaner.
PC Speed Maximizer is associated with other fake security applications. Computer users have reported that the unauthorized download of PC Speed Maximizer began after they clicked on advertisements for other supposed anti-virus programs or clicked on download buttons associated with other fake security programs such as Internet Security 2013 and XP Micro Antivirus Online Scan. These fake security applications are often distributed through fake Web applications offering a free online scan of the victim's computer. In reality, they will attempt to install PC Speed Maximizer and other known threats.
