Threat Database Adware OriginalSearchTech

OriginalSearchTech

OriginalSearchTech may advertise itself as a useful application, but, its true nature, is that of a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program). Users almost never install such applications intentionally. Instead, PUPs proliferate themselves via deceptive distribution methods designed to install them without attracting the attention of the user. OriginalSearchTech, for example, has been observed to hide inside a fake installer disguised as the installer for the Adobe Flash Player.

Once established on the system, OriginalSearchTech will initiate its two main functionalities - that of a browser hijacker and an adware application. The browser hijacker will establish control over the Web browser and modify specific settings to generate artificial traffic and promote a fake search engine. Usually, the affected settings include the homepage, new tab page and the default search engine.

The adware part is responsible for generating intrusive advertising materials on the affected device. The advertisements could be delivered as pop-ups, banners, coupons, in-text links, etc. Users should be cautious - engaging with the displayed advertisements could take them to unsafe third-party sites. They could be exposed to phishing pages siphoning all entered data, dubious online game platforms, fake giveaways, domains spreading various PUPs, or even compromised pages with real malware threats.

In addition, PUPs are known to spy on the browsing activities of users. The applications could track and access the browsing history, search history, clicked URLs, and even device details such as IP address, geolocation, ISP (Internet  Service Provider) and more. It is recommended to remove OriginalSearchTech, or other PUPs, as soon as possible, by using a professional security product, preferably.
