Threat Database Adware OperationArchive

OperationArchive

OperationArchive is a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) that is using misleading and deceptive distribution techniques to spread itself. OperationArchive's main targets are Mac users. Many may not have even realized that OperationArchive is being installed and only noticed it after the PUP had started to execute its programming.

The main goal of OperationArchive is to monetize its presence on the user's computer. OperationArchive archives this by running an intrusive advertising campaign. Users may find themselves flooded by unwanted pop-ups, banners, surveys, in-text hyperlinks and more. Engaging with the generated advertisements may cause forced redirects to dubious third-party websites, such as domain promoting additional PUPs, or even phishing and bogus technical support pages.

OperationArchive doesn't stop there, though. It also has browser hijacker capabilities that it uses to take over the user's browser. More specifically, the homepage, new tab page, and the default search engine will be modified to open a sponsored address. OperationArchive promotes the SafeFinder fake search engine via (akamaihd.net).

While the most visible actions of OperationArchive can be described as being annoying mostly, in the background the PUP may be tracking the user's activities. The most targeted data includes the browsing history, search history, clicked URLs, IP address, geolocation and ISP (Internet Service Provider).

The red flags surrounding OperationArchive shouldn't be underestimated. The recommended course of action is to remove the application, and all similar PUPs for that matter, by scanning your system with a professional anti-malware solution.
