OpenLyrics

By GoldSparrow in Adware

Malware analysts have reported that OpenLyrics is a PUP or Potentially Unwanted Program that is responsible for in-text advertisements, browser redirects and pop-up windows on Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and other Web browsers on the Windows operating system. The purpose of OpenLyrics is to generate revenue at the expense of computer users by displaying advertisements and sponsored marketing links on affected Web browsers. It is important to note that OpenLyrics is not a virus or Trojan infection, despite often being mistaken as such. PC security researchers regard programs like OpenLyrics as PUPs because they cause numerous threat-like symptoms but are often easier to remove and not as destructive as true threats. OpenLyrics should be removed immediately to stop the many unwanted symptoms that have been linked to this PUP.

How OpenLyrics Works and How It is Distributed

Web browsers affected by OpenLyrics may display numerous forms of advertisements, such as highlighted in-text advertisements, video advertisements, pop-up advertisements and banners or sliding advertisements. OpenLyrics is installed as a Web browser toolbar, usually in the form of a Web browser extension, plug-in or add-on. In most cases, OpenLyrics is bundled with low quality freeware. There are several types of free programs that are more likely to be bundled with PUPs like OpenLyrics, including media players, format converters and download managers. In most cases, the option to opt out of installing OpenLyrics is hidden or made hard to find on purpose. Because of this, many computer users will observe that OpenLyrics appears on their computer suddenly, making them assume incorrectly that OpenLyrics is a virus infection.

Undoing All the Changes Made by OpenLyrics and Similar PUPs

To stop symptoms associated with OpenLyrics, security analysts strongly advise the immediate removal of this PUP. OpenLyrics may be removed by uninstalling the PUP. To ensure that no potentially unreliable components linked to OpenLyrics remain on the affected computer, security researchers recommend the use of a reliable anti-malware program to scan the affected computer after OpenLyrics has been uninstalled. OpenLyrics may also make changes to your Web browser settings that may need to be undone manually.
