Mppn Ransomware

Mppn is a ransomware variant belonging to the STOP/Djvu family, which was discovered while analyzing malware samples submitted to VirusTotal. It encrypts data and appends the '.mppn' extension to the filenames of the affected files. Additionally, it creates a '_readme.txt' ransom note file containing instructions for victims on how to pay for decryption.

Mppn is likely to be distributed in combination with other malicious payloads such as RedLine and Vidar information stealers. Upon encryption, Mppn renames files by appending to their original name the .mppn extension; for example, 'Image1.jpg' becomes 'Image1.jpg.mppn,' and likewise, 'Image2.png' becomes 'Image2.png.mppn.' Thus, it is easy to recognize Mppn's encryption by the '.mppn' extension added to each file.

Mppn Ransomware's note provides instructions for the victims on how to get all their encrypted files back. According to the attackers, the only method of recovering the impacted data is to purchase a decryption tool and unique key from them, which will cost $980 (or $490 with a 50% discount if victims contact them within 72 hours). Victims can ask for proof of decryption by sending one of the encrypted files that should then be unlocked for free. To get in contact with the cybercriminals affected users and organizations are expected to message the 'support@fishmail.top' or 'datarestorehelp@airmail.cc' email addresses. Victims must provide their personal ID, which was created during the initial ransomware attack.
