Monochrome Tab

The Monochrome Tab is a browser extension that changes the homepage and new tab page of the user's browsers. The goal is to organize these often visited pages and make them more useful. The application does that by adding information about the current weather situation and creating several groups of links leading to frequently visited websites. These may be labeled as 'social media,' 'entertainment' or 'work.'

Due to its functionality closely resembling the effects of having an unwanted browser hijacker installed on the system, many users also may regard Monochrome Tab as falling into the same PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) category. However, the application appears to have no unsafe components and must be installed on the system manually.

On the other hand, the typical PUP will cause unwanted redirects and could even attempt to spy on the user's browsing activities by monitoring the browsing history, search history, and each clicked link. Some of these intrusive applications can go far deeper by also harvesting numerous device details or even banking and payment information that users have saved in the affected browsers.
