Mmuz Ransomware

Cybersecurity researchers have classified the Mmuz Ransomware threat as being another variant of the infamous STOP/Djvu malware family. Even though Mmuz may not be an entirely unique threat, users should not underestimate the damage it can cause. If successfully deployed, the threat will initiate a data-encryption routine on the device, and leave the vast majority of the files stored there, in an unusable state.

Victims also will discover that each locked file now has a new file extension - '.mmuz,' attached to its original name. A ransom note containing the demands of the attackers also will be dropped on the infected machine. The note will be delivered as a text file named '_readme.txt.'

Attacker's Demands

Mmuz Ransomware's note reveals that the cybercriminals demand to receive a ransom of $980 if they are to assist their victims in restoring the encrypted data. However, that initial amount of the ransom can be decreased by 50% with the only listed requirement being that victims contact the hackers during the first 72 hours of the attack. This can be achieved by sending a message to the two email addresses found in the note - 'restorealldata@firemail.cc' and 'gorentos@bitmessage.ch,' or the cybercriminals' Telegram account. Of course, communicating with people responsible for the spread of ransomware threats is not without risks and users may want to avoid doing so.
