Mmdt Ransomware

The Mmdt Ransomware is a variant belonging to the infamous and rather prolific STOP/Djvu malware family. Even though the threat fails to exhibit any major improvements, it still retains the considerable destructive capabilities of the STOP/Djvu Ransomware family. Indeed, when executed on the breached devices, the Mmdt Ransomware will proceed to target the data stored there. Victims will lose their access to important documents, PDFs, images, photos, archives, databases, etc., with all affected files being locked via a strong encryption routine.

The threat marks all of the files it locks by attaching a new file extension - '.mmdt,' to their original names. A ransom note with instructions from the attackers will be delivered to each infected device. This ransom-demanding message will be contained inside a newly created text file named '_readme.txt.'

Like most STOP/Djvu variants, Mmdt also tells its victims that they will have to pay a ransom of $980 to receive the decryption keys necessary for the restoration of the locked data. The attackers also make the typical offer to decrease the size of the ransom by 50% for anyone who contacts them within the first 72 hours. Two email addresses are mentioned as a way to reach the cybercriminals - 'support@bestyourmail.ch' and 'datarestorehelp@airmail.cc.' Victims should keep in mind that any communication with cybercriminals should be regarded as extremely risky and should be avoided if possible.
