Misticview.ru is another deceptive page that tries to convince visitors to enable its push notifications unknowingly. This is a rather popular browser-based tactic, and countless dubious pages have been put on the Internet to propagate it. The whole scheme revolves around showing fake or clickbait messages that urge users to click the displayed 'Allow' button.
The false messages may claim that clicking 'Allow' will give users access to additional content, allow them to watch a video or a file will become available for download. However, the most popular misleading scenario, by far, sees the shady website pretend to be doing a CAPTCHA check. Misticview.ru also has been observed resorting to this tactic.
Users may be greeted with an image containing robots and messages similar to:
'You're not a robot, check!'
'Press the permit button to make sure you don't have a robot!'
The text of the messages appears to be badly translated from another language, possibly Russian judging by the address of the site.
When these hoax pages achieve their goal, they will receive important browser permissions and become able to run an intrusive advertising campaign. Indeed, affected users will start encountering even more advertisements during their browsing activities. It is vital to remember that advertisements associated with such unproven sources should not be trusted. It is not uncommon for the advertisements to cause unwanted redirects to more suspicious destinations or contain offers for intrusive PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs). PUPs are annoying applications that burrow into the system and can typically execute browser hijacker and adware functionalities.
