The MetroWhiz Toolbar is an ad-supported product developed by Mindspark Interactive Network, Inc. and found at Free.metrowhiz.com/index.jhtml. The MetroWhiz Toolbar is promoted to help users find directions using a customized new tab page powered by a modified version of Myway.com. The MetroWhiz Toolbar is available for Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer users via Free.metrowhiz.com/index.jhtml and the Chrome Web Store page at Chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/metrowhiz/chehalmnfknmekckahpjefmplpaipcco. You should note that the MetroWhiz Toolbar is classified as a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP). The MetroWhiz Toolbar behaves differently across browsers. For example, MetroWhiz Toolbar takes control of the homepage and new tab page on IE and Firefox while Chrome users receive an updated new tab only. Installing the MetroWhiz Toolbar means you need to grant it the following privileges:
- Read and change all your data on the websites you visit.
- Read and change your browsing history.
- Replace the page you see when opening a new tab.
- Manage your downloads.
- Manage your apps, extensions and themes.
The MetroWhiz Toolbar retains control over your new tab page until you remove the app. The MetroWhiz Toolbar is programmed to substitute the default new tab page with Hp.myway.com/metrowhiz/ttab02/. The MetroWhiz powered tab includes links to services like Urbanrail.net, Greyhound.com, Megabus.com and Uber.com. All search terms entered on Hp.myway.com/metrowhiz/ttab02/ may be recorded by Mindspark for market development purposes. Additionally, the search results are presented at Int.search.myway.com that is supposed to be enhanced by Google but may not deliver the same results. The MetroWhiz Toolbar does not deliver mapping and transporting services on its own — it only offers links to services that do it on your new tab page. The MetroWhiz Toolbar aims to make you surf and search the Internet via Hp.myway.com. The MetroWhiz Toolbar is identical in functionality to the EasyDirectionsFinder Toolbar, the DirectionsOnline Toolbar and the DirectionsBuilder Toolbar deployed by Mindspark in the past. AV companies are known to tag the installation package for the MetroWhiz Toolbar as:
- Adware.AdLoadCRT.Win32.544
- GrayWare/Win32.StartPage.gen
- MyWebSearch.J (v)
- PUA.Toolbar.Agent!
- W32.HfsAdware.1166
- W32/MindSpark.MHJA-2086
- Win32:UnwantedSig [PUP]
