The EasyDirectionsFinder browser extension from Mindspark Interactive Network, Inc. is classified as a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP). The EasyDirectionsFinder software is promoted on Free.easydirectionsfinder.com and the Chrome Web Store as a product that helps users navigate their way through the city and plan vacations in the countryside. The marketing pitch for the EasyDirectionsFinder extension on the Chrome Web Store reads:
'Find driving directions, maps and traffic alerts, local events and people finding tools - all from one place on your browser!
This extension configures your New Tab page to EasyDirectionsFinder™ to provide free maps and navigation.'
The EasyDirectionsFinder is an ad-supported program that behaves identically to the OnlineMapFinder, the FreeMaps Toolbar and the DirectionsOnline extensions released by Mindspark prior to announcing EasyDirectionsFinder. The EasyDirectionsFinder extension may alter the new tab for Google Chrome users to hp.myway.com/easydirectionsfinder/ttab02/. The product supports versions for Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox, which receive more changes when you add EasyDirectionsFinder. The EasyDirectionsFinder software changes the default new tab, homepage and primary search provider in the Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox to hp.myway.com/easydirectionsfinder/ttab02/. The version for Chrome requests the following privileges during installation:
- Read and change all your data on the websites you visit.
- Read and change your browsing history.
- Manage your downloads.
- Manage your apps, extensions and themes.
The hp.myway.com/easydirectionsfinder/ttab02/i portal is a customized version of myway.com that includes links to services like Facebook, YouTube, Zoom.earth and Earthobservatory.nasa.gov. Surfing the Internet via hp.myway.com/easydirectionsfinder/ttab02/ allows Mindspark to claim ad revenue and allow Web surfers take advantage of EasyDirectionsFinder for free.
