MDED Ransomware

The MDED Ransomware threat is another variant belonging to the extremely popular among cybercriminals STOP/Djvu Ransomware family. The only distinguishing feature among the numerous variants is the unique file extension they append to the affected files. The lack of new functionality doesn't make MDED any less threatening, though. The threat can encrypt a large number of file types and the strong cryptographic algorithm ensures that recovery without the decryption key held by the attackers is unlikely.

The threat uses the '.mded' extension to mark the files it locks. As for its ransom note, it is dropped on the compromised systems as a text file named '_readme.txt.'

MDED Ransomware's Demands

MDED Ransomware's demands are consistent with other STOP/Djvu variants. The threat tells its victims that they will have to pay $980 to receive the decryption key and software tools from the hackers. However, if the users reach out and establish contact within the first 72 hours, the price of the ransom will be reduced by half to $490.

Two email addresses are mention in the note - 'helpmanager@airmail.cc' and 'helpmanager@airmail.cc.' Victims can attach a single locked file to their message. If the file doesn't contain any important data, it should be decrypted and returned for free.
