Maql Ransomware

Another threatening STOP/Djvu variant has been uncovered by infosec researchers. Named Maql Ransomware, the threat represents a significant danger to the computers it manages to infect. Although Maql may lack any noteworthy improvements over the typical variants from the STOP/Djvu family, it is still capable of locking a significant number of files types, rendering them both inaccessible and unusable. Victims will find that their personal and business-related files have been locked. What sets this threat apart is the '.maql' extension it uses to mark all affected files. As for its ransom note with instructions for the victims, it will be dropped on the compromised system as a text file named '_readme.txt.'

Maql Ransomware's Demands

The cybercriminals behind the Maql threat state that they want to receive a ransom of $980 if they are to help with the restoration of the locked data. However, the victims could try to reduce the demanded sum by as much as 50%. The only requirement is to establish communication with the hackers within the first 72 hours following the malware attack. The hackers also claim that they are willing to unlock a single file for free, as long as that file doesn't contain any valuable information.
