Threat Database Adware MapperIndex

MapperIndex

MapperIndex falls into the category of PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs). These deceptive applications employ various questionable techniques in their distribution to hide their installation from users' attention. The most commonly encountered tactic is known as bundling. It involves packaging the intruder application inside the installation options of another legitimate and far more desirable software product. Unless users go looking around specifically, typically under the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings, they may not even realize that any additional applications also have been selected for installation.

MapperIndex' Funtions

MapperIndex combines the capabilities of both adware and browser hijackers. In practice, this means that the dubious application will monetize its presence by generating intrusive advertisements, while also forcing the user's Web browser to open a promoted page. The advertisements delivered by such untrustworthy sources should always be approached with caution. Users who engage with them risk being redirected to suspicious sites running phishing schemes, online tactics or spreading more PUPs.

The sites most commonly promoted by browser hijackers are fake search engines. The hijacker will assume control over the browser's homepage, new tab page, and the default search engine ensuring that the promoted page will be opened every time the browser is started, a tab is opened or a search is triggered via the URL bar.

While users will be preoccupied with these easily noticeable consequences, the PUP also could be collecting various information in the background silently. Details such as the IP address, geolocation, all opened links, the entire search history, and more could be transmitted to a remote server under the control of the PUP's operators continuously.
