Magnus Ransomware

The Magnus Ransomware is an injurious threat that cybercriminals can utilize to lock the data of their victims. When Magnus is executed on a breached device, it will proceed to scan the files stored there and encrypt a wide range of different file types. A strong cryptographic algorithm ensures that the impacted data will not be easy to recover. In fact, in most cases when ransomware threats are involved, the only way to restore the locked files is by obtaining the proper decryption keys.

Unlike the vast majority of ransomware threats, Magnus doesn't have a specific file extension with which to mark each locked file. Instead, the threat generates a new random 4-character string and appends it to the original name of every encrypted file. The threat delivers a ransom note with instructions for its victims, both as a text file named 'READMEEEEEE!!!!.txt' and as a new desktop background image. Infosec researchers also have observed variants of the threat that use an image of Jerry from the famous cartoon Tom and Jerry, as the new desktop wallpaper.

Ransom Note's Details

In their messages, Magnus Ransomware's operators state that they demand to be paid a ransom of $125. However, to accept the payment, it must be made using the Bitcoin cryptocurrency and sent to the provided crypto-wallet address. The hackers are apparently willing to offer better terms for any users that are under 18 years old. For them, the size of the ransom will be only $25.

Proof of the transaction has to be provided to the hackers. Users can do so by contacting them via the qTox or aTox chat clients. Alternatively, the ransom note mentions a Telegram account at '@anibaltlgram.' Apparently, victims of the threat have just 48 hours to pay up or risk having the decryption keys for their data being destroyed.
