Magnasearch.org

Magnasearch.org claims to function as a legitimate search engine, but it is actually a fake search engine. Promoted through an unwanted extension categorized as a browser hijacker, users should steer clear of Magnasearch.org and any associated extensions.

How Magnasearch.org Operates

When users enter a search query in a hijacked browser, Magnasearch.org redirects them to robustsearch.io, another suspicious search engine. During our inspection, robustsearch.io failed to deliver any search results. Given its connection to Magnasearch.org and a browser hijacker, it is unlikely to be a reliable search engine. Such dubious search engines can provide inaccurate results and direct users to unreliable or malicious websites. They may also collect various types of information, including search queries, browsing history, IP addresses, geolocation data, and even more sensitive details.

The Role of MagnaEngine

Magnasearch.org is promoted via a browser hijacker called MagnaEngine. This unwanted extension alters the default search engine, homepage, and new tab address to Magnasearch.org. Additionally, it can activate the "Managed by your organization" feature in Chrome browsers. While this feature is typically used by organizations to enforce specific policies, extensions like MagnaEngine can exploit it for malicious purposes. MagnaEngine may gather sensitive data, block access to certain websites, and manipulate browsers by adding, removing, or disabling extensions and themes. To mitigate potential security, privacy, and other risks, it is highly recommended to remove MagnaEngine and Magnasearch.org from affected browsers immediately.

Examples of Fake Search Engines and Browser Hijackers

Fake search engines are commonly promoted via extensions designed to hijack browsers. These extensions often appear as legitimate tools but provide no real value and simply hijack browsers. Examples of dubious search engines promoted via browser hijackers include skyjem.com, find.nsrc-now.com, and foodisgood.xyz.

How Browser Hijackers Install on Your Computer

Browser hijackers are often bundled with unreliable or free software. They are included in installers as additional or optional offers and take control of browsers when users complete installations without changing the default settings (e.g., "Advanced" or "Custom") or deselecting checkboxes. Users may also be tricked into downloading and adding browser hijackers through deceptive ads, fake software updates, and notifications from suspicious websites. These hijackers are distributed via unofficial app stores, third-party downloaders, peer-to-peer (P2P) networks, and similar platforms.

How to Avoid Installing Browser Hijackers

To avoid browser hijackers, only download extensions, applications, and other software from trusted sources like official websites and app stores. Before completing any software installation, check if the installer includes unwanted offers and decline them. Avoid granting notification permissions to suspicious websites. Exercise caution when dealing with ads, pop-ups, warnings, and similar content on dubious websites, as interacting with them can result in unwanted downloads and installations. Additionally, regularly use a reputable security tool to scan your computer for threats and keep all software, including your operating system, up to date.

If your computer is already infected with browser hijackers, we recommend using an updated anti-malware tool to automatically eliminate them.
