Mac Mechanic

Mac Mechanic is a tool supposed to clean and optimize Mac machines with the end goal being better performance. Similarly to most other applications of this type, Mac Mechanic doesn’t really offer anything beyond what the user can do using the free tools Apple provides. Mac Mechanic tries to convince the user that their system is performing poorly and finds numerous problems which are usually fake. If the user wants to fix those "problems." they would have to buy the commercial version of the application.

The lack of functional advantages alone doesn’t make Mac Mechanic malware. There is no evidence Mac Mechanic does any real harm to the security of a Mac. However, a number of the most popular security solutions will detect Mac Mechanic as a PUP (short for a Potentially Unwanted Program). This designation is very suitable for Mac Mechanic because it is used for exactly this type of software.

The most common way Mac Mechanic gets on a machine is through bundles with other applications. When the user installs an application which comes in a bundle there is a chance they will inadvertently install Mac Mechanic and/or other similar programs. Luckily, getting rid of Mac Mechanic isn’t all that hard. Most decent security solutions will detect and uninstall Mac Mechanic automatically. Users can also remove it manually. All the user has to do is open Force Quit Applications, find Mac Mechanic and click on Force Quit. Then the user can follow the normal process to uninstall an app from a Mac.
