Maak Ransomware

The STOP/Djvu Ransomware family continues to retain its popularity among cybercriminal circles. The ease with which new variants can be created has allowed the hackers to unleash more and more threatening strains of this particular malware family. One example identified by infosec researchers is the Maak Ransomware. It possesses all of the destructive capabilities associated with STOP/Djvu and can easily lock victims' files if deployed to the targeted computers successfully.

One of the main characteristics that set the Maak Ransomware apart from the other variants is the file extensions it uses to mark the encrypted files. Each locked file will have '.maak' appended to its original name. When all suitable file types have been processed, the threat will deliver a ransom note with instructions for the affected users. The note will appear as a new text file named '_readme.txt' placed on the system's desktop.

Ransom Note's Details

The ransom note itself contains the usual details found in similar STOP/Djvu variants. It clarifies that without paying for the decrypter tool and necessary decryption key in possession of the attackers, restoration of the locked files will be impossible virtually. The note sets the amount of the demanded ransom at $980. However, victims could bring that price down by 50% if they message the hackers within the first 72 hours of the Maak Ransomware attack.

To initiate communication, users can try the two emails mentioned in the note. The primary address is 'support@sysmail.ch,' while 'helprestoremanager@airmail.cc' acts as a reserve email. As part of their messages, victims are apparently allowed to send 1 locked file to the cybercriminals. If the chosen file doesn't contain any important information, it is supposed to be unlocked and returned for free.
