LQQW Ransomware

A new variant from the prolific STOP/Djvu malware family has been spotted in the wild by infosec researchers. Named LQQ Ransomware it aims to infect the targeted computers and lock the data stored there. The uncrackable encryption algorithm used by the threat ensures that victims will not be able to restore their data without getting the decryption key from the attackers.

LQQW Ransomware's Details

The threat operates as a typical STOP/Djvu variant. The characteristic that sets it apart is the extension used to mark each encrypted file. In this case, the threat appends '.lqqw' as a new extension to the original names of the locked files. The ransom note with instructions for the victims si then delivered as a text file named '_readme.txt.'

Ransom Note's Overview

The ransom-demanding message covers the usual points found in STOP/Djvu variants. It mentions that victims have to pay a ransom of $980, but that sum can be reduced in half. The only requirement is that the affected users establish communication with the hackers within the first 72 hours of the LQQW Ransomware infection. Two email addresses are provided in the note, which can be used as communication channels - manager@mailtemp.ch and managerhelper@airmail.cc. A single locked file may be attached to the email message and will supposedly be decrypted for free.
