Threat Database Ransomware Loov Ransomware

Loov Ransomware

The cybercriminals are not taking a break and are still releasing more and more threatening variants based on the ever-growing STOP/Djvu malware family. One such variant uncovered by infosec experts is the Loov Ransomware. The threat follows the expected ransomware behavior - it infiltrates the target's computer, engages its encryption routine, and locks nearly all of the data stored on the device. Files such as documents, PDFs, databases, archives and more will all be rendered unusable. The attackers then extort their victims for money in exchange for assisting them in regaining access to their personal and business data.

The Loov Ransomware in particular marks each locked file. The threat appends '.loov' to the original names of all affected files. As for the ransom note with instructions, it is dropped on the system inside a '_readme.txt' text file. Typically, this file will be placed on the desktop of the compromised device.

Ransom Note's Details

The ransom note itself contains all of the information that is usually found in the ransom-demanding messages associated with STOP/Djvu variants. The attackers specify that they want to be paid a ransom of $980 but that sum can be reduced in half to $490. Apparently, the only requirement is for their victims to send a message in the first 72 hours of the Loov Ransomware attack.

The note contains two email addresses that can be used to reach the cybercriminals - 'manager@mailtemp.ch' and 'helprestoremanager@airmail.cc.' As part of their message, victims can attach one encrypted file. The attackers promise to unlock and return it for free, as a demonstration of their ability to restore all affected data.
