LocalTech

No matter how the LocalTech application may try to present itself, Mac users should keep in mind that its main purpose is to act as both a browser hijacker and adware. LocalTech also is classified as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) due to the dubious distribution techniques it employs. After all, not many users would be willing to download and install such an app on their systems. Instead, exactly like all PUPs, LocalTech tries to mask the fact that it is being installed on the user's Mac.

However, once there, the application will waste no time. LocalTech will initiate an intrusive advertising campaign that will subject any user to numerous unwanted advertisements. The advertisements could be displayed as pop-ups, coupons, surveys, in-text links and more. The advertisements could show clickbait messages to lure users into clicking on them. Doing so, however, is not recommended - via forced redirects the advertisements could lead to unsafe phishing or deceiving pages.

LocalTech also is capable of establishing control over specific browser settings - the homepage, new page tab and the default search engine. The goal is to set all three to open a sponsored address. Subsequently, whenever the affected browser is simply opened, a new tab is started, or a search is initiated in the URL bar, it would result in traffic towards the promoted address. Browser hijackers are usually used as vehicles promoting fake search engines.

Finally, users should take into consideration the fact that LocalTech might be spying on their browsing activities. The application could be collecting various data including all conducted searches, visited websites and clicked URLs. It also could siphon device details such as IP address, ISP and geolocation. The gathered information could then be offered for sale to interested parties.
