Threat Database Ransomware Kxde Ransomware

Kxde Ransomware

Another variant spawned from the still popular among cybercriminals STOP/Djvu Ransomware family has been spotted by infosec researchers. The name of the threat is Kxde Ransomware and its threatening capabilities allow it to lock the files on the infected computers. As with most ransomware threats, the threat actors responsible for unleashing Kxde will use the encrypted data as leverage to extort their victims for money.

One of the more distinctive characteristics of a Kxde Ransomware attack will be the new file extensions that the malware attaches to the original name of each encrypted file. Victims will notice that their documents, PDFs, archives, databases, photos, etc., will all have '.kxde' appended to their names. In addition, the malware also will create a new text file on the device. Named '_readme.txt,' this file will carry a ransom note with instructions from the hackers.

Ransom Note's Overview

The text of the note follows closely the typical pattern observed in other STOP/Djvu variants. The attackers state that they demand to be paid a ransom of $980. However, that initial amount can be slashed in half to $490 if the affected users contact the cybercriminals within 72 hours. Two email addresses are mentioned in the instructions - 'support@sysmail.ch' and 'supportsys@airmail.cc.' Victims also are told that they can attach one encrypted file to be unlocked for free. Of course, trusting the words of unscrupulous people involved in the distribution of malware is strongly discouraged. Users that contact the hackers or decide to negotiate with them could be exposing themselves to numerous additional privacy and security risks.
