KKK Ransomware

By GoldSparrow in Ransomware

The KKK Ransomware is a ransomware Trojan that is being used to attack computer users in Europe and the United States currently. The KKK Ransomware is designed to infect computers running the Windows operating system, affecting all versions of Windows that are used commonly, including the Windows XP and the Windows Vista. The KKK Ransomware may be delivered to victims through the use of corrupted spam email attachments, which use a Microsoft Office document that will deliver the KKK Ransomware in the form of a corrupted script embedded in the project. This script allows the KKK Ransomware to be downloaded and installed on the infected computer. A notification from the User Account Control will appear, requiring the victim to hit the 'OK' prompt. Once the victim does this, the KKK Ransomware will be installed in the AppData folder and it will begin its attack on the victim's computer. The KKK Ransomware carries out a highly-effective ransomware attack, encrypting the victim's files and then demanding a ransom to provide the decryption software or key needed to recover the affected files.

Another Hate-Themed Ransomware Attack

The KKK Ransomware will run as an executable file named 'Facebook.exe' and will have the product name (in file properties) 'Facebook app for Computer.' Con artists may brand their ransomware Trojans as a way to stand out from other ransomware Trojans. The KKK Ransomware itself seems to be branded in reference to the KuKlux Klan, a racist organization that has been responsible for hate crimes and numerous terrible things since its emergence in the 19th century. However, there is nothing linking the KKK Ransomware to the organization, but it is merely a theme picked for this particular threat. There are countless ransomware Trojans with different themes, ranging from popular video games and movies to serious political figures and movements. Beyond its use of the Klan for its theme, there is nothing to differentiate the KKK Ransomware attack from the countless other ransomware Trojans that are active currently.

How the KKK Ransomware Trojan Carries out Its Attacks

The KKK Ransomware carries out a typical ransomware attack, encrypting the victim's files using a strong encryption method. The KKK Ransomware will target the files generated by the user, which may include video and audio files, photos, and files from popular software such as Microsoft Office, Libre Office or the Adobe Acrobat. The KKK Ransomware will delete all Shadow Volume Copies of the affected files, ensuring that they cannot be recovered using alternate means. Once the KKK Ransomware encrypts a file, it is no longer accessible or readable by the Windows Explorer or the victim's software. The file is essentially useless until the decryption key is used to recover its content. The files encrypted by the KKK Ransomware attack are easy to identify because the KKK Ransomware will append the file extension '.kkk' to the end of each affected file.

Protecting Your Computer from the KKK Ransomware and Other Ransomware Trojans

The KKK Ransomware demands a ransom of 0.05 BitCoin (approximately $140 USD at the current exchange rate). The payment of this ransom is not recommended unless there is not another choice. Not only does it not guarantee that you will recover your files; it also allows the con artists responsible for the KKK Ransomware to continue creating and distributing the KKK Ransomware Trojan and similar threats. Instead, take steps to make your data protected from ransomware infections. Fortunately, simply having file backups on an external memory device or the cloud is enough to make you invulnerable to the KKK Ransomware and similar threats completely. After all, if a victim of the KKK Ransomware attack can simply restore the affected files, then the people responsible for the KKK Ransomware attack lose any leverage they have over the victim.
