HopStrem

HopStrem is an intrusive browser extension that is being promoted and distributed via deceptive websites. The reliance on such shady distribution techniques serves as a basis for its classification as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program). As for its intended functionality, the application claims that after installing it, users will enjoy an improved browsing experience with far fewer encountered pop-ups or other advertisements.

However, in reality, HopStrem turns out to be one such source of unwanted and annoying advertisements. It is designed to generate monetary gains for its operators specifically by running an intrusive ad campaign on the users' computers and devices. Applications displaying such behavior are regarded as adware.

Users should never trust the advertisements delivered by adware or other unfamiliar sources blindly. Far too often the advertisements utilize various clickbait or misleading messages to trick the user into interacting with them. Afterward, they can cause redirects to misleading websites running fake giveaways, phishing schemes and more. The advertisements also could be promoting suspicious software products with hidden intrusive capabilities.

HopStrem itself asks users to allow it to collect their browsing data. Some adware and PUPs are equipped with data-harvesting functionalities specifically. While present on the system, these applications may be accessing the user's entire browsing history, search history, and clicked links. In addition, these applications may acquire numerous device details that also will be transmitted and made available to their operators.
