HistCleaner is a dubious application, whose main purpose is to act as a browser hijacker. These intrusive programs hide their installation via deceptive distribution techniques, such as bundling. The goal is to get installation on the computers or devices without the users realizing it. That is why HistCleaner also may be classified as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program).
The Web browsers affected by HistCleaner will be forced to open a promoted address. Users will notice that this page will be set as the browser's homepage, new tab page and the default search engine. The PUP promotes the fake search engine at histclean.com. Fake engines take the user's search queries and redirect them through a legitimate one (Bing, in this case) as they cannot produce any results.
While this aspect of the PUP's actions is undeniably annoying, far more sinister things could be happening in the background. After all, most PUPs are known for having data-harvesting capabilities. Users risk having their browsing activities tracked and then transmitted to a remote server. It is strongly recommended to scan your computers or devices with a professional security solution to clean up any such intruder applications.
