Hhew Ransomware

Cybersecurity researchers continue to detect ransomware threats created from the STOPDjvu malware family. Despite the different variants being mostly identical, with few distinguishing features, that doesn't mean that they are any less threatening. This is exactly the case with the Hhew Ransomware. The threat exhibits all of the usual characteristics of a STOP/Djvu variant and is capable of rendering a large set of file types completely unusable. The strong encryption algorithm used by the threat ensures that it will not be feasible to restore the affected files without having the proper decryption keys.

Victims of the threat will notice that their documents, pictures, archives, PDFs, databases, and more have now been marked by having '.hhew' appended to their original names. In addition, the ransomware will create a text file named '_readme.txt' on the breached device. Inside the file, users will find a ransom note with instructions.

According to the ransom-demanding message of the attackers, victims will have to pay $980, or $490 if they establish contact within the first 72 hours. As potential communication channels, the cybercriminals leave two email addresses - 'support@bestyourmail.ch' and 'supportsys@airmail.cc.' One encrypted file can be attached to the message and will supposedly be unlocked for free.
