Threat Database Ransomware Ggeo Ransomware

Ggeo Ransomware

Cybercriminals are releasing more ransomware variants based on the notorious STOP/Djvu malware family. One such threat is the Ggeo Ransomware. Despite it being almost identical to all of the other variants based on the STOP/Djvu Ransomware family, users should not underestimate the damage it might cause. When executed on a breached system, the Ggeo Ransomware will start an encryption routine that will leave most of the data stored on the device in an unusable state. The utilized cryptographic algorithm is strong enough to make the restoration of the files without having the necessary decryption keys nearly impossible.

Victims of the threat will notice that their files now all carry '.ggeo' as a new file extension. Furthermore, a new text file named '_readme.txt' also will appear on the device. The file contains a ransom note with instructions from Ggeo Ransomware's operators. According to the message, victims will have to pay a ransom of $980. Establishing contact with the attackers within 72 hours will supposedly lower that price by 50% to $490. The hackers also express their willingness to unlock one file for free.

Users can send the file to the email addresses mentioned in the ransom note - 'support@bestyourmail.ch' and 'supportsys@airmail.cc.' Keep in mind that any communication with cybercriminals should be avoided. There are no guarantees that the hackers are going to fulfill their promises. At the same time, users risk becoming victims to additional malware attacks or schemes leading to more financial losses, compromised data, or other serious consequences.
