Users who find themselves landing on the Freepotato.fun website will soon realize that there is nothing fun about the page. Indeed, it exists solely for the purpose of running popular online tactics. In most cases, dubious websites, such as this one are created to exploit the otherwise legitimate push notifications browser feature. The con pages trick users into enabling their push notifications and then earn revenue for their creators by delivering unwanted advertisements.
The exact scenario that users may encounter on the page could vary. Infosec experts have observed some of these questionable pages modifying their behavior based on users' IP addresses and geolocation. Still, one of the most commonly seen tactics involves the page pretending to be doing a CAPTCHA check. Users are led to believe that clicking the shown 'Allow' button will prove that they are not bots and will grant them access to the content of the site. Freepotato.fun also has been confirmed to show a video window that currently cannot be played. The implication, reinforced by the displayed messages, such as 'To access the video, click Allow,' is that users must press the button to play the unspecified video.
Following the instructions of websites such as Freepotato.fun could be risky. The advertisements generated by unknown or unproven sources, often promote additional untrustworthy destinations that might include fake giveaways, phishing portals, shady online gambling or gaming platforms, as well as websites spreading intrusive adware, browser hijackers, or other PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs).
