Cybersecurity analysts have uncovered a new data-encrypting Trojan lurking on the Web. The name of this threat is flowEncryption Ransomware. The flowEncryption Ransomware is not a very complex project, and according to malware researchers, the threat is yet to claim any victims. This probably is due to the fact that this appears to be a data-locker created for testing and not for real campaigns.

Despite the fact that the flowEncryption Ransomware has not yet been used to target users, it is capable of encrypting various filetypes. It is likely that this file-locker would target documents, images, audio files, videos, presentations, spreadsheets, archives, databases, etc. The files that the flowEncryption Ransomware encrypts would receive a new extension appended to their filenames –' .flowEncryption.' This means that a file named 'pink-cloud.svg' will be renamed to 'pink-cloud.svg.flowEncryption.' Data-encrypting Trojans like the flowEncryption Ransomware are often distributed with the help of phishing emails containing corrupted links or macro-laced attachments. Cybercriminals who propagate file-lockers often rely on fake application updates, malvertising operations, torrent trackers, bogus social media posts and other basic distribution methods.

The creators of the flowEncryption Ransomware can, at any point, decide to use this threat to launch campaigns targeting real users, so you should be wary of this data-locker. To protect your PC from threats like the flowEncryption Ransomware, installing a modern, trustworthy anti-virus solution is recommended.
