Feed Chunk

Feed Chunk is a browser hijacker that plagues Mac users. Like a typical PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) it spreads itself through underhanded methods such as bundling. In the vast majority of cases, users don't even realize that an intruder application is being installed on their devices.

If Feed Chunk is successful, it will proceed to take control over the user's Web browser. More specifically, it will change certain settings, such as the homepage, new tab page, and the default search engine. The goal of these modifications is to drive artificial traffic towards a sponsored address. Whenever the user starts the affected browser, opens a new blank tab, or initiates a search via the URL bar, they would be taken to the promoted address immediately. This particular browser hijacker assigns the browser settings to open its own dubious search engine at feed.chunkapp.com.

Dealing with the annoying consequences of a browser hijacker can be tricky. Many PUPs establish persistence mechanisms that can restore them if users fail to eradicate the unwanted application from their Macs completely. That is why it is strongly recommended to use a professional security product to clean the affected system.

Another good reason to remove all PUPs is that these applications are known for spying on the user's browsing activities. They can collect various data (search history, browsing history, device's IP address, geolocation, etc.) and transmit it to a remote server. The operators of the PUP can then exploit the received data in several different ways, including selling it to interested third parties.
