Threat Database Adware ExpandedService

ExpandedService

ExpandedService presents itself as a useful application that could help users browse the Web in a more convenient manner. The truth, however, is somewhat different - ExpandedService is an adware application designed to monetize its presence on the user's Mac computer. While adware is not considered a direct threat to the computer, the intrusive advertising campaigns they conduct lead to a severely diminished user experience. Furthermore, the advertisements themselves could take the user to questionable or outright unsafe third-party websites.

Among the common redirect destinations, are pages running fake giveaways or surveys, as well as phishing or technical support tactics. Users also could land on domains dedicated specifically to the proliferation of various PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs).

ExpandedService also falls into the PUP category due to the deceptive techniques it uses to spread itself. After all, not many users would install these applications willingly. Instead, the PUPs mask themselves as a fake installer/updater for another more popular software product. Users also should be on the lookout for a tactic known as 'bundling.' It consists of adding the PUPs installation to the installation process of another freeware program. The PUP could usually be found as a preselected option under the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' settings.

It is strongly advised to avoid keeping any PUPs on your devices or risk having your browsing activities tracked. The collected information might include the entire browsing and search histories, clicked URLs, device's IP address and geolocation, and more.
