Threat Database Ransomware Ewdf Ransomware

Ewdf Ransomware

The notorious STOP/Djvu Ransomware family is still retaining its popularity among cybercriminals. As a result, infosec researchers are continuing to uncover different threatening variants of STOP/Djvu being released into the wild. One such example is the Ewdf Ransomware threat. Although Ewdf is a simple variant without any major improvements, its potential to cause damage remains significant.

Once the threat has been deployed on a breached device, it will initiate an encryption routine with an uncrackable cryptographic algorithm. All processed files will no longer be accessible or even usable. Furthermore, they will be marked by having '.ewdf' appended to their original names, as a new extension. The ransom note of the threat will be dropped on the infected machines as a text file named '_readme.txt.'

Ransom Note's Overview

According to the instructions of the attackers, victims of the Ewdf Ransomware can still recover their data. However, they will have to pay a ransom to receive a decryptor tool and the necessary decryption keys. The sum demanded by the cybercriminals is $980 but can be reduced to $490. The only requirement mentioned in the note is for the affected users to initiate communication within the first 72 hours of the attack. They can also attach 1 locked file to their message. If the file doesn't contain any important information, it will supposedly be decrypted and returned for free. The email addresses found in the ransom note are 'restorealldata@firemail.cc' and 'gorentos@bitmessage.ch.' Apparently, the cybercriminals also have a Telegram account at '@datarestore.'
