Essential-scan.com is a rogue website used by its operators to propagate popular online tactics. Users who land on the page risk being shown deceptive or misleading messages. The exact scheme that they may encounter on the site could vary, based on the user's IP addresses and geolocation. When examined by infosec researchers, Essential-scan.com was observed running a version of the 'You've visited illegal infected website' tactic.
This particular scheme consists of a rogue website displaying several, fabricated security alerts. Users may even be presented with a supposed threat scan that has detected multiple malware threats being present on their computer or device, even though no website is capable of such functionality on its own. All of the warning messages will be presented as if coming from a reputable source - in this case, the site exploits the name, brand, and interface design of the McAfee Corp. It is important to realize that the companies are in no way connected to these fraudulent pages.
Typically, the fraudsters behind sites like Essential-scan.com aim to generate gains by scaring users into buying a subscription for a legitimate security application. The fraudsters are then likely to receive commission fees through affiliate programs. However, the rogue website could quickly be switched to start spreading intrusive PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) disguised as security tools. By installing the application recommended by the rogue website, users could be introducing adware, browser hijackers or other invasive applications to their devices.
