Duck Browser Extension

Users who have installed the Duck browser extension could start noticing some strange occurrences happening while browsing the Internet. For example, they could be frequently interrupted by unwanted and intrusive advertisements. Their browser also may often redirect to unfamiliar websites or cause their searches to be redirected to unknown search engines. In short, the Duck browser extension is classified as yet another PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) that may act as adware and a browser hijacker.

Adware applications generate money for their operators by running annoying advertising campaigns, resulting in numerous advertisements being delivered to the user's device. The advertisements are typically for shady destinations, such as fake giveaways, technical support schemes, online betting/gambling portals, etc. Browser hijackers, on the other hand, are designed to take over users' Web browsers, modify several important settings and start promoting a sponsored Web address. By changing the homepage, new tab page, and default search engine, the browser hijacker will ensure that its sponsored page receives artificial traffic.

Another common issue when it comes to PUPs that should not be underestimated is that these applications often spy on users' browsing activities. While active on the system, the PUP could monitor the browsing history, search history, and clicked URLs and transmit all relevant data to its operators. In some cases, however, PUPs have been observed harvesting device details or even sensitive information taken from browsers' autofill data (account credentials, banking info, payment details and more).
