The Dragon Messenger threat is a malware designed to target Android devices. According to cybersecurity researchers, the Dragon Messenger malware is the creation of North Korean developers. This threat is designed to target North Korean defectors who have escaped the totalitarian state. Malware analysts suspect that the Black Shoggoth hacking group is likely behind the campaign distributing the Dragon Messenger threat.

The Dragon Messenger malware appears to be propagated with the help of a bogus fundraising application. The fake application claims to be raising funds for North Korean refugees in need. To make it more believable, the authors of the Dragon Messenger threat also have set up a fully functioning website that gives out detailed explanations regarding the goal of the charity and how it operates. To make matters worse, the creators of the Dragon Messenger malware managed to bypass the security of the official Google Play Store, which allowed them to host the threatening application there, under a fake name. The bogus application was promoted with the help of the fraudulent WordPress charity website we mentioned before.

When the Dragon Messenger threat compromises a targeted device, it will allow its operators to take control of the infected system. The main goal of the Dragon Messenger malware appears to be reconnaissance – collecting information about the targets that can later be utilized in other campaigns. According to some reports, the Dragon Messenger malware also can be used for collecting capital from its targets.
More and more cyber crooks are developing malware that targets Android devices exclusively. Make sure to protect your Android device with a legitimate anti-virus application that will not allow threats like the Dragon Messenger malware to compromise your system and threaten your data.
