There is an increasing number of cyber crooks who build data-locking Trojans and use them to extort innocent users online. More and more victims report every day that their data has been struck by a ransomware threat, and they have lost all their files. Cybersecurity researchers have spotted yet another file-encrypting Trojan lurking on the Web and looking for victims. The name of this threat is the Dishwasher Ransomware.

Propagation, Encryption and Encoding

The distribution method involved in the spreading of the Dishwasher Ransomware is yet to be uncovered. Some experts speculate that mass spam email campaigns may have been utilized in the propagation of the Dishwasher Ransomware. These emails would contain a carefully crafted message, which has the goal of convincing the user that the file attached to the email is harmless. If the user falls for this and opens it, they will infect their system with the corrupted payload stored in the attachment. If the Dishwasher Ransomware manages to sneak into your computer, it will scan your data and locate the files, which it will encrypt. The Dishwasher Ransomware will then apply an encryption algorithm to lock them. After this is through, you will notice that the names of your files are different. The Dishwasher Ransomware not only adds a '.clean' extension to the encrypted files but also makes sure to encode their names.

The Ransom Note

The Dishwasher Ransomware sets the 'bg-jpg' file as the background on the victim's desktop. This is an eerie black and white image of an individual with a mask and hoodie on, likely a social engineering tactic to scare the user into giving in to the attackers' demands. There does not appear to be a ransom note, which explains the situation or gives out contact details. However, the Dishwasher Ransomware drops a file named 'dump.keys' which contains information needed to complete the decryption.

We would advise you strongly to look into downloading and installing a reputable anti-malware application, which will help you remove the Dishwasher Ransomware from your computer. Make sure you keep all your software up to date as outdated applications may put your system in danger.
