DigitalConverterz is an intrusive PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) designed to promote sponsored addresses via browser hijacker techniques. Users that have allowed the application to be installed on their computers or devices will immediately notice the consequences of its presence there. Their Web browsers will start redirecting to an unfamiliar address at digitalconverterz.com. The page is associated with a fake search engine.
The redirects to the promoted page will occur whenever the affected browser is launched, users open a new tab or try to initiate a search via the URL bar. The explanation for this behavior is quite simple - the browser hijacker modifies the browser's homepage, new tab page and default search engine settings. All three will now begin opening the digitalconverterz.com address.
Users should keep in mind that fake engines do not produce results on their own. Instead, they hijack the entered search queries and further redirect them to other sources. In this case, one confirmed source of the presented results is nearbyme.io. This is a questionable search engine that is capable of generating results, but it may be of low quality or include various sponsored advertisements.
Another unwanted consequence of having a PUP on your device is that the application may have data-tracking capabilities. The browsing activities carried out on the device may be uploaded to a remote serve continuously. More importantly, other sensitive information also may be packaged and exfiltrated. The targeted data may include device details or even account and banking credentials extracted from the affected browsers.
