Dewd Ransomware

Cybercriminals have unleashed another dangerous ransomware variant based on the infamous STOP/Djvu malware family. The threat is tracked as the Dewd Ransowmare and is capable of locking numerous file types. Victims will be left unable to open or access their documents, PDFs, photos, images, archives, databases and more. The goal of the attackers is to use the locked data as a hostage and then extort the affected users for money.

One of the characteristics that distinguish the Dewd Ransowmare from the countless other STOP/Djvu variants, is the file extension it uses to mark each encrypted file. Indeed, affected users will notice that all encrypted files now carry the '.dewd' file extension at the end of their original names. Another change to the system will be the creation of a text file named '_readme.txt.' The purpose of this file is to deliver the ransom note with instructions for the victims.

Ransom Note's Overview

The instructions left by Dewd Ransomware state that to receive the decryptor tool and decryption key necessary to restore the locked files, affected users will need to pay a ransom of $980. However, the sum can be reduced by 50% with the only requirement being that victims initiate communication within 72 hours of the Dewd Ransomware attack. They also can send a single locked file to be decrypted for free. The note mentions two email addresses that can be used to contact the attackers - 'manager@time2mail.ch' and 'supportsys@airmail.cc.'
