The DefendSearch.com domain was registered on January 4th, 2018 and appears to offer access to a search engine called 'Defend Search.' The DefendSearch.com domain is associated with the 'Secure Chrome PRO' browser extension that you can find on the Chrome Web Store when you load h[tt]ps://chrome.google[.]com/webstore/detail/secure-chrome-pro/balaejcnclfobnenddbghfljcjnkmfed. The DefendSearch.com search service is said to deliver protection from "viruses, fishing and unrecognized sites." We suspect that the creators of the 'Secure Chrome PRO' extension may have wanted to say protection from phishing — the act of misleading users into doing something and disclosing personal information by pretending to be a trusted company. However, 'Secure Chrome PRO' is not recognized as a reliable cyber security tool given that it may collect information from users and has no protection mechanisms.
The 'Secure Chrome PRO' extension is programmed to reroute the search operation in the Omnibox and load DefendSearch.com as opposed to loading your preferred search service. You may notice that DefendSearch.com resembles Google.com and offers access to 'Images,' 'Videos' and 'Maps' search lenses. A simple browsing test of DefendSearch.com showed that the options shown at DefendSearch.com trigger redirects to Google and DefendSearch.com, which might attempt to record your input on the 'Login' form for Google. The statements on Chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/secure-chrome-pro/balaejcnclfobnenddbghfljcjnkmfed might lead users to believe that DefendSearch.com includes additional layers of protection when it does not. The icon placed by 'Secure Chrome PRO' in Chrome may show notifications that HTTP connections are secure and mislead users. The people behind DefendSearch.com and 'Secure Chrome PRO' use privacy protection services from domain registrars and do not provide contact details or Privacy Policy at DefendSearch.com. The 'Secure Chrome PRO' extension is classified as a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP), and you might wish to avoid using DefendSearch.com for your daily activities. You can remove software associated with DefendSearch.com by using the Extensions Manager in Chrome and a credible anti-spyware scanner.
