DefaultSearch

DefaultSearch is classified as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) due to the deceptive distribution methods it employs to spread itself. This is a common behavior for these applications, as users are extremely unlikely to install them willingly. The core functionality of the application is that of a browser hijacker. It aims to establish control over the user's Web browser and modify its settings. The goal is to promote and drive artificial traffic towards a sponsored address.

DefaultSearch can affect the most commonly used browsers. On Google Chrome, specifically, it abuses the 'managed by your organization' feature to limit the actions of the user. The address it promotes is find.defaultsearch.info, a fake search engine. The browser will be forced to open the address as a homepage, new tab page, and also use it for a default search engine. The engine is classified as fake due to its inability to produce any meaningful results on its own. User's searches will instead be redirected through Google for results.

PUPs are known for spying on the user's browsing activities and DeafultSearch is unlikely to be an exception. It might access the browsing history, clicked URLs, and all searches conducted through the promoted search engine. PUPs oftentimes also harvest device details such as IP addresses, geolocation, ISP and more.

Users should avoid keeping PUPs on their computers or mobile devices. Try to remove them as soon as possible, preferably with a professional security solution to ensure that no traces of the unwanted application are left behind.
