Threat Database Adware DefaultEntry

DefaultEntry

DefaultEntry is classified as a Potentially Unwanted Application (PUA), due to its stealthy means of distribution and questionable functions and features. This threat has both adware and browser hijacker qualities.

As an adware, its goal is to display intrusive advertisements, like pop-ups, banners, coupons, etc., on visited sites and other interfaces. Such undesired content interferes in a negative way with the browsing quality of affected users and endangers the safety of the device. Any advertisements displayed by DefaultEntry may endorse rogue, deceptive, and potentially unsafe websites, while in extreme cases, they can even download and install malware when clicked on.

When acting as a browser hijacker, DefaultEntry reassigns the browser’s default search engine, homepage, and new tab URL with the specific fake search engine that the PUA is supposed to promote. Therefore, newly opened browser tabs and Web searches done via the URL bar redirect to the advertised address. Fake search engines usually cannot provide search results, so they exploit Yahoo, Google, Bing, and other legitimate ones to deliver search results to the user. Furthermore, most PUAs have functions to track data. The collected information may contain browsing and search histories, personally identifiable data, financial details, etc. Subsequently, it usually gets monetized by selling it to third parties. It is recommended to remove PUAs from your device as soon as possible.
