Threat Database Browser Hijackers Data Shield for Chrome

Data Shield for Chrome

The Data Shield for Chrome has been classified as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) and a browser hijacker. This dubious and intrusive application is most likely being spread via shady software bundles or by being injected into fake installers. Like most browser hijackers, the data Shield for Chrome's main functionality is related to the promotion of a sponsored page by taking over the user's Web browser. In this particular case, the promoted page is seach.wiseghostapp.com, which is yet another fake search engine.

To maximize the artificial traffic redirected towards the sponsored site, Data Shield for Chrome will assume control over the browser's homepage, new tab page and the default search engine. In practice, this will mean that whenever users launch the affected browser, open a new tab, or try to make a search via the URL bar, they will always be redirected to seach.wiseghostapp.com.

Keep in mind that the search results delivered by such unproven and dubious sources may not be trustworthy. Search.wiseghostapp.com has been observed to take results from the legitimate Bing search engine. However, engines of this type often base their behavior on a combination of factors such as the user's IP address, geolocation, device type, browser type and more.

In addition, while present on the system, these intrusive PUPs could be spying on users' browsing activities silently. They also may collect numerous device details and transmit them to their operators.
