CyborgLock Ransomware

A growing number of cybercriminals are taking an interest in developing and distributing ransomware threats. Some are highly-skilled individuals, while others are much less experienced in the field of malware. The CyborgLock Ransomware is among the newest spotted file-locking Trojans, and experts believe that this threat may be the creation of a less experienced individual. What leads malware researchers to believe this is that the ransom fee is demanded in the shape of Amazon gift cards. Most creators of ransomware threats tend to require the fee be paid in Bitcoin or other popular cryptocurrencies, as this would be untraceable.

Propagation and Encryption

The propagation techniques used in the spreading of the CyborgLock Ransomware remain unknown. It is likely that the attackers are using spam emails with macro-laced attachments, torrent trackers, bogus software updates, and fake pirated versions of popular applications. When the CyborgLock Ransomware infiltrates your computer, it will begin looking for the file types it was programmed to target. Data like archives, music, videos, images, spreadsheets, documents, and a long list of other files will be targeted for encryption. Then, the encryption process will begin, and the CyborgLock Ransomware will lock all the targeted data. The CyborgLock Ransomware has an interesting feature – instead of appending an extension at the end of the file name, it will place ‘Lock.Cyborg.’ at the start of it. For example, a file that was called ‘charcoal-eyes.jpg’ initially, will be renamed to ‘Lock.Cyborg.charcoal-eyes.jpg.’

The Ransom Note

The ransom notes of the CyborgLock Ransomware are stored in files called ‘Cyborg_DECRYPT.txt’ and ‘100$ how to recover your files and folders.txt.’ In the note, the attackers state that they would like a $100 Amazon gift card as a ransom fee. The gift card is to be sent to the ‘bhacks740@gmail.com’ email address. As usual, the authors of the ransomware threat claim that if the user attempts to use any third-party decryption tools, their data will be damaged permanently.

We would advise you to avoid contacting the authors of the CyborgLock Ransomware. There is no point in paying the ransom fee, as there is no guarantee that the attackers will hold their end of the deal. Instead, you should download and install a legitimate anti-spyware application and use it to remove the CyborgLock Ransomware from your computer safely.
