CryptoTab Browser
The CryptoTab Browser is a legitimate application that allows users to mine for the Bitcoin cryptocurrency in the background while they are browsing the Internet, watching movies, doing work, etc. Unfortunately, numerous dubious apps that mimic CryptoTab have been released. Users are misled by the fake applications to install them without realizing that these apps have additional undisclosed functionalities. The CryptoTab browser hijacker is one of these fakes that is designed to take over the user's browser, modify certain settings, and generate artificial traffic towards a sponsored address. In most cases, the homepage, new tab page, and the default search engine will be modified to open the promoted address.
The biggest red flag around the CryptoTab browser hijacker, however, is that users will not receive any of the Bitcoin cryptocurrency that will be mined. Instead, all generated coins will be redirected to a wallet under the control of the scammer. In addition, the CryptoTab browser hijacker could begin tracking the browsing habits of the user. Information including browsing and search histories, clicked URLs, geolocation, IP address, etc. could be collected and then uploaded to external servers.
Numerous intrusive alerts could also start to appear as a result of having CryptoTab browser hijacker installed on your system. The ads should be regarded as a potential security risk as they could redirect to unsafe websites. Users could be exposed to phishing or tech support scams, land on domains spreading deceptive PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs), or even malware threats.
